Spotlight on Hip Hop Diva DJ Shortee

She didn’t set out to the be best but…the Grammy Foundation, said “DJ Shortee is the world’s premiere female DJ”, and DJ Times said, “The ultra-versatile DJ Shortee has become Queen of the Scratch World.  She has become an unquestioned paragon in her field.”  She also didn’t set out to be a trailblazer but…Shortee is the only female ever to be a “Power Mixer” on Power 106 FM in Los Angeles.  Shortee is the first female to produce an instructional DJ DVD series.  Shortee is the only female ever to produce a solo turntablist album.  Shortee is the first female to produce a battle record.  So, it’s pretty safe to say she didn’t set out to become a DIVA, but hey, if the shoe fits…

So, what did DJ Shortee set out to do?  Well, she didn’t want a career in music.  Although she played musical instruments her entire life she witnessed her father, a composer, struggle financially and knew that she wanted something totally different.  So what brought about the change in heart?  DJ Shortee began to DJ while in school for graphics design and found out there was good money in it.  Actually, she made enough money to pay her way through school.  While honing her skills as a DJ she met and fell in love with her husband Faust.  Studying and practicing under the mentorship of Faust, DJ Shortee mastered the art of scratching and combined it with her love of music of all genres.  She spins everything from House, Hip Hop, Top 40, Mash Up, Funk, Soul, Rock, Drum & Bass, and Breaks & Dubstep.  Her prowess on the turntables has taken her on tours across the world including North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.  She has been the DJ for DIVAS Bahamadia and Roxanne Shante.

In step with being a DIVA, DJ Shortee launched two record labels with her husband and partner, Faust: 5 Star Records for Hip  Hop and DJ Tools and Heavy Artillery Recordings for House/Dubstep/Drum & Bass.  Shortee realized that it took her a while to learn the techniques involved with scratching and thought of how much easier it could be for other DJs to learn the skill with instruction.  This is the driving force that led her to become a head professor at The Scratch DJ Academy (co-founded by Jam Master Jay) and to teach DJ/Remix courses fo the Grammy Foundation.  Ever the businesswoman, DJ Shortee produced her own DVD series: Shortee’s DJ 101, Shortee’s 202, and Turntable Tune-Up.

DJ Shortee may not say so herself, because she’s humble and down to earth, but she is a DIVA.  She loves hip hop music and spins it for crowds all around the world.  She’s not narrow-minded in her musical tastes and works with several genres of music.  She has built very successful businesses around her passion, talent, and skill set.  She recognizes the need to help others and does so through teaching. A pretty strong argument exists to prove that DJ Shortee is a true Hip Hop DIVA.
