DJ Superstar

Underground DIVA of the Week DJ Superstar let THEHIPHOPDIVA.COM know why she decided to become a DJ and what she looks for in up and coming artists.  Here’s what she had to say.

HHD:  What made you want to be a DJ?

DS: I am a lover of music!! I didn’t realize I wanted to Dj until after college; and Guitar Center had a “FunkMaster Flex” starter kit. So I decided that was something I wanted to do!

HHD: I read that you’re patterning yourself after DJ EQUE and DJ Beverly Bond.  How is that so?

DS: Both of those young ladies carry themselves in such a “classy” manner, and they can DJ!!!!  Eque is from Houston, so I gotta represent for the “H”!! Had a chance to meet both young ladies and they are so genuine and about business!

HHD: What do you do with independent artists to help them gain exposure?

DS: I will play their songs, but they need to be prepared !! Also I try to give them as much advice as I can.

HHD: What do you look for in an independent artist that will make you want to work with them?

DS: Confidence!!!

HHD: I know that you have rocked many parties and clubs.  Are you interested in being a DJ for an artist?  If so, who are some of the people you have in mind?

DS: Actually that’s one of my 2010 goals!! As such, I would love to DJ for Erykah Badu , Mary J , Kelly Rowland, and Nicki Minaj.

HHD: Who would you say is the freshest rap/DJ duo and what about them makes them so?

DS: Outkast, hands down!!! Very unique, origianal, and unafraid!!! Love them!!!

HHD: What female rap artist past or present can you spin at a club/party and you know she gets the party started?

DS: Lil Kim, “Crush on You”, “Big Momma Thang” – Anytime I play any of those joints everybody goes bananas!

HHD: What are you working on right ow that you want us to be on the lookout for to support?

DS: My mixtape ( BossChick Takeova) featuring 3 young ladies from Houston!! Working on a huge fashion show for the spring, I’m also releasing another mixtape in January.

HHD: What is your definition of a hip hop diva?

DS: A Hip Hop Diva is a young lady who has a genuine love for her music, herself, and the grind !!
