Ever heard the saying “When you’re handed lemons, make lemonade?” Well, it sums up the attitude of Christina Mendez, the DIVA who makes lemonade. Well, she doesn’t literally make lemonade, on second thought, maybe she does. Either way, the saying is perfect for her story.
So, what is her story? She’s been modeling on and off since 1993. Why on and off? It’s definitely not because she doesn’t have what it takes. She became pregnant with her son early in her career and took time off to give birth and care for him. That time off was extended when she found out he was autistic and decided to care for him full time. In the modeling world, that was a huge decision. So, we’ll say that situation represents her lemons. Christina made lemonade by getting involved with Autism Speaks, an organization dedicated to providing information on medical breakthroughs, treatment, coping, and ways to raise awareness. Volunteering with this organization helped her with her son and allowed her to help others at the same time. She proves she has what it takes by not only re-entering the modeling world, but by taking it by storm. Since her return, Christina has appeared in Glamour, Urban Latino Magazine, and BET’s Rip the Runway. She is one of the first plus-size Hispanic models featured in Baby Phat, Apple Bottoms, Rocawear, and Dereon. Most recently, she was recognized by Fox News as one of the sexiest, most successful top plus size models.
Why is she a DIVA? She has a deep love for everything that is hip hop. She doesn’t just walk the runway to hip hop music, she feels the music deep down in her soul. She appreciates what the culture offers to overall society. She volunteers her time to help others.
